Quitline
Iowa
Calls Surge in January
Posted 8 February
2010
The number of calls to Iowa’s helpline for quitting tobacco use
skyrocketed in late December and January, making the period one of the
most successful on record. The 5,284 calls to Quitline Iowa
(1-800-QUIT-NOW) exceeded the total received during the same period
last year by nearly 36 percent.
“Frankly, we’re very surprised by these numbers,” said Iowa Department
of Public Health Director Tom Newton. “Iowa has seen a 22 percent
decrease in adult smoking since 2006. A smaller pool of smokers should
mean fewer calls to Quitline Iowa, not more. Whether it’s the economy
or some other factor, these numbers clearly show that Iowans appreciate
and need this valuable public health service.”
As was the case during the January 2009 campaign, Iowans who called
1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) could receive a four-week supply of
nicotine patches, gum or lozenges to help break their addiction to
tobacco-Iowa’s number one cause of preventable death. Iowans who missed
this opportunity can still call to receive a free two-week supply of
the nicotine replacement products.
Quitline Iowa was recently ranked fifth among 46 reporting states in
terms of reaching tobacco users. Successful promotional campaigns, such
as the one completed in January, have been an important part of
Quitline Iowa’s reach, which is currently almost six times higher than
the national average.
