Iowa State Patrol Kicks Off New Enforcement Initiative over Super Bowl Weekend
Posted 4 February 2010
Over Super Bowl weekend, February 5-7, 2010, the Iowa State Patrol will be working to take drunk drivers off of Iowa roadways.  Motorists who think they can toss back a few drinks and casually get behind the wheel after their football parties should think twice, as this weekend the Iowa State Patrol is also launching a new enforcement initiative aimed at catching those drivers most at risk.

The Iowa State Patrol and Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) have identified 45 troopers who will now focus their energy, every day, on enforcing Iowa’s laws related to seatbelt use and impaired driving in high risk areas.  Specifically, the 45 troopers will be working to reduce crashes in Iowa’s Top 22 counties, where data shows there are high numbers of motor vehicle fatalities and personal injuries.

Over the last year the Iowa State Patrol, along with its local partners, conducted a series of similar, data driven enforcement efforts.  The Iowa State Patrol’s 2009 “Safe Saturdays” program is just one example.  Because of these efforts, motor vehicle fatalities in eight central Iowa counties (part of the Top 22) dropped by 23 percent.  The next largest 14 counties outside of central Iowa saw a decline in motor vehicle fatalities of six percent.  The goal of the new program is to commit troopers to conducting such enforcement efforts year-round to gain even greater results.

Colonel Patrick Hoye said, “We’re eager to start collecting data on this year-round enforcement initiative.  This effort is very unique and we’re confident troopers along with our local law enforcement partners, will show Iowans that highly focused enforcement saves lives, especially when implemented 24/7.”

This weekend, drunken drivers beware.  Troopers with the Iowa State Patrol will be out in force Friday, February 5 - Sunday, February 7, 2010, doing their best to keep Iowa roads safe and execute a successful start to its new, data driven enforcement initiative.
