NICC Celebrates African-American Heritage Month
Posted 2 February 2010
Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) and the Diversity Council will host events to celebrate African-American Heritage Month in February. The first event, “What’s with all the QUILTS?” begins on Feb. 1 at the Peosta campus. Another exhibit, open from Feb. 17-18, features an Underground Railroad exhibit in the Peosta campus boardroom. These events are free and open to
the public.

“What’s with all the QUILTS?” runs from Feb. 1-26 and staff, students and the public are invited to participate in a scavenger hunt in the main building. The activity utilizes Ozella’s Underground Railroad quilt codes to share how current and former slaves, abolitionists and human rights activists in the 19th century communicated with escaped slaves en route to the North during their struggle for freedom.

Participants may pick up a trivia sheet at the Peosta campus switchboard and search the building for each type of quilt code. The scavenger hunt concludes with a final quilt in the Burton Payne Library. At the library, all participants may enter to win a gift certificate to the NICC bookstore.

On Feb. 17-18, NICC will display an historical exhibit in the campus boardroom that illustrates Iowa’s crucial part in the Underground Railroad. The exhibit is open 9 a.m. 5 p.m. both days. The Underground Railroad was a vast network of people who helped fugitive slaves escape to the North and Canada. The network was not run by any single organization or person, and the effort effectively moved hundreds of slaves northward each year.

For more information on the events, contact Cindy Benedict, NICC Diversity Council co-chairperson and TRiO-Student Support Services director, at (563) 556-5110, ext. 406.
