Regents Reject Tuition Reduction
Posted 12 December 2008
Attempts
to reduce a proposed tuition increase at Iowa's public universities
failed Wednesday, Dec. 10, during a meeting of the state's Board of
Regents.
Undergraduates from Iowa at the University of Iowa, Iowa State
University and University of Northern Iowa will now pay 4.2% more for
tuition next year.
After 90 minutes of discussion and an amendment for a lower increase
failed, members of the board adopted the 2009-10 school year tuition
hike by a 6-2 vote.
Members supporting the tuition increase said that it is necessary to
maintain quality and funding at the three universities, in light of the
economy and the likelihood the state appropriation will take a hit.
The Board of Regents, during their meeting, considered options of no
tuition increase and a 3.2% increase, but both attempts failed.
